Please don't do it! The town is in decline. Unemployment is high, crime is on the increase. Do yourself a favour and stay put!!

You would be making a big mistake moving here. This town has become a dismal rundown dump. Yops on the streets, police do nothing. My Wife and I are trying to move out before it gets much worse. Gt Yarmouth as a town is finished.

Don't take any notice of any bad reviews of Great Yarmouth in the replies. It's a town like any other and yes, it has it's problems, but there are far more worse places.
The bonus is we live by the sea, and we have a working river, a good town centre with plenty of shops as well as an out of town shopping area. There's always plenty to do and see, restaurants, cafes, pubs for nightlife as well as nightlife, cinema etc.
An Outer Harbour is currently under construction and it should mean more jobs and hopefully a ferry service to Holland. An entertainments complex and a casino is also planned with 1,000 jobs on the cards. Property is nice and comparatively cheap, good value actually.
What's weird is if the people who whinge about Great Yarmouth actually live here, what are they doing living here? If it's as bad a picture as previous replies have painted, why haven't they moved? They choose to live here. I suspect they never visit some of the wonderful places here: the Time and Tide Museum (they probably don't know we've got a museum), the Roman fort at Burgh Castle (they probably think it's just a village near Yarmouth), and wonderful beaches both north and south of Yarmouth, perfect for dog walks (but they probably don't walk anywhere further than their nearest pub, or benefit office).
Come and have a look around. We love it.

1000's of jobs created .
On the construction of the outer harbour there will be and influx of cheap labour as the construction industry is full of money men who charge big and do cheap so only 10% of labour will be proper tradesmen and of them about 6% will be local so not much going into the local community.
The sea is only fit for sea gulls and not swimmers which is similar to the rest of uk.
I've visited the beach and you are correct they are fit for the dogs and not people as there seems to be poops every where so try carrying a bag and clean up after your dogs
Finally you are correct again as I have moved out of the town as it is far to run down and doesn't look like finding a way back to its former glory unfortuantly

It depends what you are looking for. GY is a decent seaside town, controlled by the mafia - that's the mafia that own the hotels and arcades. It's a town which lives and sleeps in the 1960s, a town with a huge amount on benefits, no ambitions and content to let the world go on its merry way. We have many interesting sights. Large TV screens that don't work, signs to a park-and-ride that doesn't exist and even though the tourist board say it is an all year round resort, between Novemeber and April it is like a ghost town. If you want a town to die in peace, then this is your place. O yes, if you want a job, forget it, unless you want to cook burgers, pick turnips or help the councillors carry their huge pensions to their cars. This could be a great place. It is in the grip and control of vested interests.

Well we just moved here (last September), so it didn'y put us off. We moved to reduce commuting, as my partner works in Yarmouth, and so far we're very pleased.
Pro's
House prices - we swapped a tiny two bedroom in Norwich for a large three bed in Yarmouth for less money.
Wildlife - we have Breydon Water and North Denes on the doorstep - both major nature reserves, plus Winterton Dunes (one of the most important SSSI's in the country) just up the road. We've seen Spoonbills, Kites, Marsh Harriers, tens of thousands of waders... This really is a birdwatcher's paradise - shame the council don't do more to take advantage of it - eco-tourism could be really big here.
Urban/rural mix - we can walk to the shops, you have the convinience of a town and yet the countryside is just minutes away.
Sea - I'm really enjoying the ability to walk on the beach anytime I feel like it - and lots of it is real dune ecosystem, not just holiday resort beaches. There's tern colonies and waders, and a stunning collection of wildflowers.
Employment - I really like the fact that there's lots of small engineering firms around here that actually make things. With the coming boom in off-shore wind farms, this place is really going to take off. It has the off-shore experience from oil and gas, the new harbour - everything necessary.
Con's
Crime is high - we've had two muggings in nearby streets since we got here, the car's had its wing mirrors smashed and next door had a brick through their window the other day. I wouldn't walk the streets at night and we drive daughter everywhere. It's the biggest downside - if you're the sort to want to go to a pub or eat out of an evening, this isn't the place to come - as you are really only safe if you're driving. It doesn't bother us as we are the sort to come in of an evening and settle down in front of the telly. If we wanted to go out we'd go to Norwich.
Appearence - the town does look shabby and run-down, the seaside bit is stunningly grotty and tacky - think candyfloss and kiss me quick hats, while the shopping center is positively third-world.
The council - a bunch of ancient, hide-bound reactionaries who haven't adjusted to the new conditions, and who still think that the whole of the UK population are going to somehow spontainiously decide to take up traditional bucket and spade holidays. Their only policy is to cater to the holiday establishment and dual the Acle straight - they haven't had a new idea since 1960.
